EDTC 245 - Computers in the Classroom

A.  Catalog Description:

Computer concepts applied to education with emphasis on the many uses for a computer, types of educational programs, selection, evaluation, and utilization of hardware and software, and general computer literacy.

B.  Conceptual Framework:    Teacher as a Professional Educator for Lifelong Learning

This course provides a focus on integrating technology, Internet resources and curricula competencies for current use in an educational setting and for continued use through lifelong learning experiences.  The selection and use of materials will foster respect for global, multicultural, diverse populations as well as learners with special needs.  Consideration is given to observe and incorporate assistive and adaptive features of software, hardware, materials and equipment prior to purchase for use.

C.  Purpose:

The major purpose of this course is to provide future educators an opportunity to research, develop and implement standards-based instructional materials, utilize Internet resources and incorporate other technologies into cross-curricular classroom activities.

D.  Objectives:    The student will

            1.  Develop basic Internet telecommunication skills such as email and web conferencing.
            2.  Practice extended Internet skills such as browsing, searching and web page development
            3.  Plan and produce curricular resource information
                    a.  Become aware of curricular standards/benchmarks for subject areas
                    b.  Research and develop resource materials for practical classroom application
                    c.  Prepare and maintain online resource materials for educational use
            4.  Design/maintain electronic portfolios for conveying personal credentials, presenting research
                 findings and distributing course developed projects.
            5.  Develop multimedia lessons as requested by instructor or in-service partner for utilization in actual
                 classroom settings
            6.  Work collaboratively with classmates and in-service partners in curricula development
 

E.  Methods of Evaluation:

            1.  Hands-on activities during class                     4. Project presentation

            3.  Electronic Portfolio assessment                      6. Written exam

Note:
        a.  The grade of  I (incomplete) will only be assigned in emergency circumstances, such as serious illness.
            Academic dishonesty in any form will result in a grade of  "F" for the assignment in which it was demonstrated.
        b.  Any student with impaired sensory, manual, or speaking skills has the responsibility to contact the instructor regarding reasonable accommodations.
